  The following linked Times article is significantly longer — over 4,000 words — than most that The Learning Network uses for the Article of the Day. For those teachers who have limited class time, you might consider having your students read the first section of the article (ending at the section beginning “A long history of failure”) and answer questions 1-4. For teachers with more time, we encourage your students to read the whole article.

  Before reading the article:

  Do you feel your school meets your needs? Do you feel you are known and supported at your school? Do you feel that who you are — your identity, culture, community — is respected and valued? Does your school care if you succeed or fail?

  Now, read the article, “‘I Feel Invisible’: Native Students Languish in Public Schools,” and answer the following questions:

  1. The article begins: “The faint scars on Ruth Fourstar’s arms testify to a difficult life on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation.” What are some of those literal and figurative scars?

  2. Ms. Fourstar, a 17-year-old student at Wolf Point High School in Montana, believes that school is a dead end. “I’m just there,” she said. “I feel invisible.” What does she mean by invisible? What are ways that she is invisible, according to the article?

  3. According to federal data, Native American students have “some of the worst academic outcomes of any demographic group.” List at least three outcomes and tell us which outcomes you found to be most significant.

  4. In 2017, the Tribal Executive Board of Fort Peck filed a civil rights complaint with the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights requesting a federal investigation into discrimination in the Wolf Point school system against Native students. What evidence does the board provide for unequal treatment? Which do you find most convincing?

  5. Diana Cournoyer, the interim executive director of the National Indian Education Association, an advocacy organization, says, “The federal government created a policy to culturally annihilate us.” What does cultural annihilation mean? How does the history of Wolf Point, Mont., support her charge?

  6. One of the few places where Ms. Fourstar has flourished at Wolf Point High School is within the Opportunity Learning Center, an “alternative” program. Why do you think she finds this a more supportive space?

  7. Jayden Joe, 17, died by suicide during a school lunchtime. What factors were involved in his suicide? Do you think the school bears some responsibility for his death? Why is the suicide rate so high in the teenage Native population?

  8. Angeline Cheek, a Lakota educator and community organizer, was hired in 2016 as a Native student advocate for half a dozen schools, including Wolf Point High School. What creative ways did she try to reach and support Native students? Why has she met with some resistance?

  Finally, tell us more about what you think:

  — Have you experienced or ever witnessed discrimination in your schooling? Please explain. If yes, have you or others ever spoken out or taken action to address discrimination? If no, what kinds of things do you think your schools have done to ensure all students get an equal education?

  — Following the publication of this article, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights announced that it would investigate claims of discrimination against Native American students in schools. What do you think the outcome of this investigation will be? What are other ways discrimination toward Native American students can be addressed and remedied?
